Counselling Skills for Dietitians

Judy Gable and Tamara Herrmann

Video

Scene 3 The dietitian talks to her colleague

The scene takes place in the dietitian’s office after the diabetic clinic.

While watching the video, you will find it helpful to make notes about:

  • • how the dietitian feels;
  • • what she found unsatisfactory about her consultation with the patient;
  • • her concerns about using counselling skills;
  • • the ways in which her colleague supports her.

Some points to consider

  • • How does the dietitian feel about the interview with her last patient?
  • • What aspects of the interview does she find difficult?
  • • How does the dietitian decide that the patient probably was not motivated?
  • • What concerns does the dietitian have about using the listening skills needed in the patient-centred approach?
  • • How does her colleague help the dietitian address her concerns?
  • • How might using a counselling approach help (i) the patient and (ii) the dietitian?
  • • What continuing professional development might you need in respect of communication skills or personal development?
