Case 7: A Patient with Weakness of the Hands and Arms
CASE
A 36‐year‐old pianist notices that his hands feel odd and describes it ‘as if they are wrapped up in bandages’. Ten days earlier he had felt unwell with symptoms suggestive of an upper respiratory tract infection and this had resolved within 3 days. Within 2–3 days the odd feeling in his hands subsides but he notices that he has difficulty rising from an armchair after watching TV all evening. The next morning he feels very ‘shaky on his feet’ and visits his GP who admits him to hospital. Within 24 hours after admission he can no longer walk and is noticed to have weakness of the upper limbs and weakness of eye closure.
