Case 6: A Patient with a Post‐Operative Deep Venous Thrombosis
CASE
A 54‐year‐old woman has a hysterectomy for uterine cancer. Unfortunately the operation is complicated by a post‐operative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) but otherwise she makes a good recovery. Four months later she develops, within a few hours, painless weakness of her left leg, which keeps giving way. On examination she has normal power at the hip but weakness of knee extension, an absent knee jerk and a vague patch of reduced sensation above the knee.
