Case 33: A Patient Who Has Unsteady Gait After a Hip Replacement
CASE
A 60‐year‐old woman undergoes a hip replacement under general anaesthetic. During the recovery phase as she is mobilizing she undergoes a deterioration in her gait and complains that her feet, and to a lesser extent her hands, feel ‘numb’. On examination she has a bilateral spastic paraparesis with extensor plantars and absent ankle jerks. Proprioception is markedly impaired in the feet and fingers.
