Case 9: A Patient with Lower Back Pain
CASE
A 44‐year‐old woman presents to her GP with a 3‐month history of lower back pain which is particularly worse at the end of the day. The pain is a dull ache, does not radiate anywhere and does not wake her at night. She has recently started taking regular paracetamol. The patient has recently moved to this country from Ghana and works as a secretary. She does not complain of fevers although she has been more tired than usual over the last couple of years. Her appetite and weight are steady.
Recent blood tests showed:
Hb 12.5 g/dL WCC 3.2 × 109/L (neutrophils 1.1) Platelets 248 × 109/L
Blood film: neutropenia, otherwise normal
Electrolytes, liver function tests, calcium: normal
