Case 4: A Patient on HRT with Deep Venous Thrombosis
CASE
A 64‐year‐old woman taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has a proximal deep venous thrombosis (DVT) with no other precipitating factors. She is treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and warfarin. The heparin is stopped and warfarin continued. Blood is taken for a thrombophilia screen and gives the following results:
INR 2.6 Antithrombin 108% Protein C 35% Protein S 37%
Factor V Leiden: present in heterozygous state
Prothrombin mutation: not detected
