Case 25: A Patient Who Has Had a Total Hip Replacement
CASE
A 56‐year‐old man has a total hip replacement. He is given low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) as prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism. His regular medication is quinine for night cramps and bendroflumethiazide for hypertension and atorvastatin. Pre‐operative full blood count (FBC) is Hb 12.5 g/dL and platelets 305 × 1012/L. He bleeds more than average and first day post‐operatively his Hb is 7.2 g/dL and platelets are 415 × 1012/L. He has a 3 unit blood transfusion. On day six post‐operatively he has a routine FBC showing Hb 11.1 g/dL and platelets 33 × 1012/L.
