Case 33: Recurrent Infections in a 49‐Year‐Old Woman
CASE
A 49‐year‐old woman is referred by her GP with a 5‐year history of recurrent chest and sinus infections. She was admitted to hospital the previous year with pneumococcal pneumonia (blood culture positive); at the time of her most recent infection Haemophilus influenzae was grown from her sputum. She tends to cough up a small amount of sputum most mornings. She had immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) when she was in her early twenties, but this resolved after a short period on treatment with steroids in modest doses and has not recurred. She currently takes no medication. She has a good appetite and her bowels are regular. Her full blood count shows a normal differential white cell count. A CT scan of her chest shows evidence of bronchiectasis.
