Infectious Disease
Case 16: A Traveller with Jaundice
CASE
A 22‐year‐old male backpacker went travelling in Thailand for 6 weeks. He had now been back in the UK for 2 weeks. The decision to travel was spontaneous so he had no vaccinations nor did he take malaria chemoprophylaxis. He stayed in semi‐rural areas and ate local cuisine and his alcohol intake was minimal. He is an ex‐smoker. Since his return, he has had a fever and flu‐like symptoms, which slowly improved but a week later he became jaundiced. Though he felt better he presented to his GP concerned by his skin discolouration. There was no rash, diarrhoea or chest symptoms. He had no sexual contacts during this time. He does not take regular medication and denies illicit drug use.
