Case 13: A Patient with Possible Diabetes Mellitus
CASE
A 20‐year‐old man presents to his GP with a 2‐week history of tiredness, thirst and polyuria. There is no history of weight loss but the patient is suspicious of a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus as several family members take tablets for glucose control. He appears well and physical examination is unremarkable. He is found to have glycosuria on dipstick. Random finger prick glucose is 10.7 mmol/L. A diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) is suggested and he is referred to the local diabetes department.
