Case 7: A Patient with Hyponatraemia
CASE
A 71‐year‐old woman is recovering from an operation and is noted to have a serum sodium of 116 mmol/L, a potassium of 4.0 mmol/l, a urea of 8.0 mmol/L and a glucose of 5 mmol/L. She has marked peripheral oedema, an underactive thyroid (thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH) is 23 mU/L), her jugular venous pressure is elevated and she is on frusemide (furosemide) 80 mg/day.
