Case 45: A Woman with Frequent Loose Stools
CASE
A 34‐year‐old woman is referred with frequent loose stools. This has been a problem for 2 years. She has a good appetite and her weight is stable. She suffers lower abdominal bloating and has her bowels open between 3 and 7 times a day – predominantly clustered in the morning. She has marked rectal urge and a sense of incomplete emptying. She has never experienced rectal bleeding or nocturnal diarrhoea. She has found that her symptoms are made worse by certain foods and by stress. Blood tests and stool culture are all normal. A colonoscopy and biopsies performed two years ago was normal.
