Case 4: A Woman with Difficulty Defaecating
CASE
A 58‐year‐old woman reports increasing problems with defaecation. She reports that her symptom of bloating is made worse by taking a high‐fibre diet and she is only able to defaecate with the use of regular Senna, bought at the local chemist. She has no history of any significant illnesses. She has had three children all by vaginal delivery. The largest child weighed 8 lbs 4 oz and required an episiotomy and forceps. Examination including digital examination of the rectum reveals slightly lax anal tone. Bloods including serum calcium and thyroid are all normal. She has had faecal occult blood (FOB) tests performed by her GP and these were normal also.
