Case 36: A Man with Acute Pancreatitis
CASE
A 52‐year‐old lawyer attends the clinic following a recent discharge from hospital. He had just suffered a second episode of acute pancreatitis. He is teetotal and has no other significant past medical history. During his admission it was noted that his liver blood tests were mildly abnormal but an abdominal ultrasound showed a normal calibre bile duct and 2–3 small stones in an otherwise healthy looking gallbladder.
Blood tests showed:
Hb 14.5 g/dL WCC 6.4 × 109/L Platelets 186 × 109/L Na 135 mmol/L K 4.2 mmol/L Urea 3.8 mmol/L Albumin 42 g/L Bilirubin 14 µmol/L ALP 180 U/L AST 46 U/L
