Case 26: A Patient with Barrett's Oesophagus
CASE
A 65‐year‐old man attends the clinic for discussion regarding his diagnosis of Barrett's oesophagus. This was first identified 10 years previously and since that time he has been attending for surveillance endoscopies every 1–3 years (depending on the integrity of the recall system at the local hospital and his own memory). He takes 20 mg of omeprazole daily and experiences no heartburn. His last endoscopy was performed 6 months ago and this revealed 6 cm of Barrett's. Biopsies taken at that time showed columnar metaplasia (with intestinal metaplasia) but no dysplasia. His elder brother has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer but he has no other family history of cancer. He has just retired and admits that the Barrett's issue worries him.
