Case 15: A Man with Heartburn and Painful Swallowing
CASE
A 38‐year‐old man attends the outpatient department describing heartburn. He experiences a retrosternal burning discomfort on a daily basis. His appetite is good and he admits to having gained 12 kg over the preceding 2 years. He denies dysphagia but does have painful swallowing (odynophagia) and effortless regurgitation. He has tried over the counter antacids with some benefit but his symptoms are getting worse. His paternal uncle recently died from oesophageal cancer. Examination is normal.
