Case 14: A Woman with Difficulty in Swallowing
CASE
A 42‐year‐old woman reports a long‐standing difficulty in swallowing. Her general health is good but she has been increasingly troubled with food taking a long time to ‘go down’. Her appetite is good and her weight is stable. She denies heartburn or indigestion. She has experienced occasional nocturnal aspiration. Examination is normal. Bloods are normal. Chest X‐ray shows scarring at the right base. Endoscopy shows a dilated oesophagus with food debris and a lower oesophageal sphincter that fails to open to air pressure.
