Case 9: A Patient with Coma
CASE
A 49‐year‐old man was brought to hospital in coma following a major seizure. According to his wife, he had complained of feeling unwell 7 days before admission, and then developed an occipital headache. He had attended A&E 2 days before admission when fever (39°C) was noted, but no other abnormal signs. A diagnosis of influenza was made. He went home to bed. His headache persisted despite regular paracetamol. On the day of admission he had been confused and had vomited, and then had a tonic‐clonic seizure lasting 10–15 minutes, without regaining consciousness after this. He had travelled to Spain two months previously. His health was good and he took no regular medication. He was a non‐smoker. He drank around 30 units of alcohol a week. Other family members were well.
