Case 20: A Baby with Severe Pneumonia
CASE
A boy was admitted to his local hospital at the age of 9 months with severe pneumonia. Haemophilus influenzae was isolated. He was treated with antibiotics and made a gradual recovery. During his admission he was noted to have loose stools and his weight had fallen from 75% at 3 months to 0.2nd centile on admission. Cryptosporidium was isolated from his stools. His immunoglobulin results were measured as follows:
Normal range IgG 2.0 g/L 3.0–10.9 g/L IgA <0.1 g/L 0.20–0.7 g/L IgM 2.3 g/L 0.60–2.10 g/L
