Case 14: A Patient Who Has Collapsed after Eating A Take‐Away
CASE
A 19‐year‐old student is brought into A&E having collapsed at home after eating a Chinese take‐away with some friends. They have driven him straight to A&E. He had been to the pub first and had had 6 pints of lager. He has itchy hives on his arms and face, and his lips are swollen. He says his chest feels tight. He normally has mild exercise‐induced asthma and has used his salbutamol inhaler without effect. He feels dizzy and has stomach cramps. When he was younger, he had had lip and tongue swelling when he ate peanuts, so has avoided them since. On arrival in A&E his oxygen saturation is 92%, BP 85/50 mmHg, heart rate 116 beats/min. There is widespread wheeze in the chest.
