Case 2: An Elderly Patient with Mobility Difficulties
CASE
A 75‐year‐old man presents to A&E unable to stand up unaided. He reports an increasing difficulty in general mobility for the last 6 weeks, particularly with activities such as rising from a chair and lifting objects from cupboards above head height. He is otherwise reasonably well, with a background history of hypertension, on diuretic therapy and hyperlipidaemia on a statin.
Initial examination reveals global reduction in motion, which is more pronounced in the proximal muscles of both upper and lower limbs. His muscles are not tender to touch. Neurological examination is normal otherwise with normal reflexes and plantars are downgoing. He is referred to the medicine for the elderly service for further assessment.
