Case 20: Palpitations in a Young Woman
CASE
A 35‐year old woman is seen in outpatients with palpitations. She is normally fit and well, except for these palpitations. She experiences an attack 2 or 3 times a year. They start suddenly, last 20‐30 minutes, and stop suddenly ‘as if the heart goes back into gear’. They feel fast, and regular. There are no other associated symptoms during the attack, though she does wonder if she passes more urine following an attack. She has never blacked out, or felt like blacking out, during or outside of an attack. They can occur at any time, there are no particular triggers, and she wonders if deep breathing may stop the symptoms. They have been present for ‘many years’, and she has come to see you really to establish the diagnosis.
