Self-Assessment Questions

42. Ovarian neoplasms

  • Where do epithelial ovarian cancers generally spread, and how might these metastases manifest clinically?

    Correct answer:
They generally spread locally to the fallopian tube and uterus, and they also disseminate to the contralateral ovary and within the peritoneum. Cancer implants can be found in the cul-de-sac, bowel, mesentery, omentum and diaphragm. Ascites can be a consequence of these implants, thus leading to abdominal bloating as well as dyspepsia and urinary frequency from compression of organs.
